Casa del Congreso de Angostura: the house where Gran Colombia was born

· 4 min read

Panoramic view of the Ciudad Bolivar historic quarter with the Cathedral

In Ciudad Bolívar, facing Plaza Bolívar, a pink colonial house hosted the 1819 Congress of Angostura. What it means, what to see and how to fit it into your visit.

In 1819, Ciudad Bolívar — then called Angostura — was for a few months the political capital of the independence cause, and the Congress of Angostura met in a house you can still visit: the Casa del Congreso de Angostura, on Plaza Bolívar in the historic center.

If you want to know what to see in Ciudad Bolívar with real history behind it, this is the essential stop. Here Simón Bolívar convened the Congress, delivered the famous Angostura Address, and on 17 December 1819 the Fundamental Law joined Venezuela and New Granada into the Republic of Colombia, which historians call Gran Colombia. For a few years, the city you are walking in sat at the center of a republic that reached all the way to Quito.

What happened here in 1819

The Congress of Angostura opened on 15 February 1819. Bolívar presented a draft constitution and proposals not everyone accepted — such as a hereditary senate — but the congress approved a constitution in August and, in December, the Fundamental Law creating the Republic of Colombia with three departments: Venezuela, Cundinamarca and Quito. Bolívar was elected president.

That is why the city remembers the Congress each 15 February. If you plan to travel near that date, message us ahead of time: it is worth confirming at the front desk what events or openings are planned.

What to see at the Casa del Congreso

The house dates from the 1770s and stands out for its pink color on the west side of the plaza. Inside it keeps the character of a colonial house: formal rooms, wide corridors and courtyards. It is a short visit, about an hour, and best enjoyed unhurried.

Opening hours and access conditions can change; ask at the front desk before you go.

Pairing it with the rest of the center

The house sits in the historic quarter, so it fits naturally into a walking route:

  • A full half day: Casa del Congreso, Plaza Bolívar and the cathedral, then sunset on the Paseo Orinoco. See our guide to the historic center on foot.
  • With one more day: add the Jesús Soto Museum in the morning and keep the center for the afternoon. The full plan is in 48 hours in Ciudad Bolívar.
  • Traveling for work: an hour of history between meetings is a good plan. Ask at the front desk about the best time of day.
