Getting to and around Ciudad Bolívar

Ciudad Bolívar is the capital of Bolívar State and sits roughly 100 km west of Ciudad Guayana (Puerto Ordaz and San Félix). You can arrive by air or by road, and it is worth understanding both before you fix your itinerary.

By air

Tomás de Heres National Airport is located in the centre of the city, which makes the transfer on arrival short. It is one of the country's busier airports for domestic and tourist traffic, and it is the departure point for flights to Canaima.

Commercial flight availability to Ciudad Bolívar varies. Always confirm with the airline before travelling.

By road

The Ciudad Bolívar Passenger Terminal, on Avenida República, connects with the rest of the country and lets you buy tickets in advance.

If you drive in from central or western Venezuela, you will cross the Angostura Bridge, the first bridge ever built across the Orinoco. It runs close to 1,700 metres and links Ciudad Bolívar with the rest of the country. You can also arrive via Ciudad Guayana.

Getting around the city

• Buses. The most widely used option. The city has a rapid transit system called TransBolívar.
• Por puestos. Shared cars running fixed routes, part of the city's daily fabric.
• Taxi or your own vehicle. The most practical choice if you have several appointments a day.

One piece of advice from people who host work travellers every week: group your destinations by district. The city stretches along the river and crossing it repeatedly costs more time than you would expect.

What to expect from the weather

Temperatures stay between 23 °C and 37 °C all year, averaging 26–30 °C, with around 1,022 mm of rain annually. Light clothing, plenty of water, and air conditioning in the room.
