An Angel Falls itinerary: why it pays to start from Ciudad Bolívar

Most people planning to see Angel Falls do it backwards: they book the flight to Canaima and then work out how to reach the departure airport. That order is how flights get missed.

This itinerary runs the right way round.

Why the starting point matters so much

Access to Canaima is by air, and sightseeing flights leave early. Two things everyone learns too late:

• The flight depends on the weather. A departure shifting by hours, or to the next day, is normal rather than bad luck. If your itinerary has no slack, a delay costs you the connection home.
• Arriving overnight from another city to fly at dawn is a recipe for trouble. Either you miss the flight or you take it without having slept.

Ciudad Bolívar solves both. Tomás de Heres National Airport is in the centre of the city, not on its outskirts: you leave the hotel and you are there. And if the flight moves because of weather, you are in a city with something to do rather than in a waiting room.

Day 1 — Arrive in Ciudad Bolívar

Arrive with daylight left, not at night. You come in over the Angostura Bridge, the first bridge built across the Orinoco, or by air into Tomás de Heres itself.

Drop your bag and walk. Half an afternoon is enough for the essentials: the Paseo Orinoco, the historic riverfront, facing La Piedra del Medio — the islet Humboldt called the *Orinocometer*, because the water level against the rock marks the river's rise. Here the Orinoco narrows to around 800 metres, which is where the name the city carried for eighty years came from: Angostura.

Climb to El Zamuro Fort or the Angostura Lookout for sunset. Best hour, best view.

Eat early and sleep early. Tomorrow starts before dawn.

Day 2 — Fly to Canaima

An early departure from Tomás de Heres. The flight crosses rainforest and tepuis before landing at the Canaima camp.

From there the itinerary continues, depending on what you booked, by curiara — the traditional river boat — towards the falls. Many itineraries include a night at a camp inside the park.

Book this flight before the hotel, not the other way round. Flight availability governs everything else.

Day 3 — Angel Falls

The highest waterfall in the world, inside Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The volume of water changes considerably across the year: ask your operator what to expect for the dates you are considering, because the difference between seasons is dramatic.

Day 4 — Return, with margin

Here is the advice that saves the most trips: do not book your onward international flight for the same day you return from Canaima. Leave a night of margin in Ciudad Bolívar.

If the return is delayed by weather — and it happens — you have somewhere to sleep instead of losing an international ticket. And if everything runs on time, you gain a morning for the Jesús Soto Museum of Modern Art, the first museum in the world devoted to kinetic art, in the city where Jesús Rafael Soto was born. For almost everyone who visits, it is the surprise of the trip.

Where to sleep on the Ciudad Bolívar nights
